Headfort School

Ireland's sole extant preparatory boarding school is Headfort School, which was founded in 1949 by Lord and Lady Headfort at Headfort House near Kells, County Meath. It shut down in March 2020, but a new school with the same name and a new headmaster opened its doors in September of that same year. A new Headmaster named Philip McCormick was hired in September 2021. Around 75 kilometers to the northwest of Dublin, in County Meath, at Headfort House, is where the school is situated. The Headfort Trust, a nonprofit organization, traditionally let the school's operational company rent the western and central portions of the house; the eastern wing of the building serves as a separate residence called Headfort Court.

Programs in Headfort School

The first four years of Headfort's program complement the primary school curriculum in Ireland with engaging, practical teachings that emphasize play and exploration. English, math, and irish are among the fundamental disciplines that make up the curriculum. Also, students participate in weekly lessons in positive psychology, ukulele, music, French, and SESE. Through its ground-breaking Virtues Programme, Headfort School places a high priority on character development. Headfort School encourages the kids to assist one another by introducing these concepts to the whole class early on, which strengthens their feeling of community and, in turn, fosters confidence growth. Headfort School makes use of the vast grounds for frequent nature walks and promotes comprehensive cultural and moral discussions in the classroom. Also, students have access to a variety of extracurricular lessons, such as piano and guitar. The lower years spend a lot of time in the main school building as well as a few creatively created purpose-built classrooms in the stone courtyard building that once housed significant estate employees on the demesne. Every week, students gather for a school assembly in the historic Dining Parlour. They also use the painting studio and participate in a reading buddy program with older students in the library.

Also, students have access to a variety of extracurricular activities, such as piano and guitar, theater, speech and drama, and more. The Infants lessons are housed in the creatively constructed "Forge," but students also have access to the common areas of the school, including the main dining hall and their own dedicated library. This increases the enjoyment and passion of reading that Headfort School fosters across the board. From the third form forward, Headfort School keeps fostering a passion of study. The Irish Primary School Curriculum is expanded to include a subject-led approach in these classrooms. As a private prep school, Headfort School is able to give students more opportunities to learn and experience new things through subjects like Science, Spanish, French, English, Mathematics, History, and Geography as well as through extracurricular activities like athletics, rugby, hockey, and cricket. The school features specialized art and design classrooms with a traditional studio and a cutting-edge computer design lab where teaching coding is now a key component. The King's Hospital, Eureka, St. Patrick's Classical School, Alexandra College, Clongowes Wood College, St. Columba's College, Cheltenham Ladies' College, Eton College, and Clongowes Wood College are just a few of the recent secondary schools where students have recently been prepared for admission and scholarships. Headfort School uses a variety of instructional strategies, best teaching practices, global perspectives, and a broad extracurricular program.

The Senior 1 class is modeled after a Transition Year program rather than being an option to retake sixth grade. This year offers students the chance to grow up, assume leadership responsibilities, get new experiences and opportunities, meet new people, and learn how to collaborate on projects as a team.

The development of leadership, critical thinking abilities, and self-directed learning are given more importance, as well as personal growth. This experimental year gives students the time, space, and chance to leave a highly organized setting and enter one where they can be more accountable for their own academic and personal growth.

Children study Irish or Latin & Classics in addition to English, Math, French or Spanish, History, Geography, Science (Chemistry, Physics, and Biology are taught as standalone subjects on a term-by-term basis using a fully equipped laboratory), Computing, Religious Studies, Music, Art & Design, and Science.

Students' abilities in research, writing, and presentation are put to use in the creation of the school newspaper. Following a brainstorming session, they can work alone or in pairs to collect data for their newspaper subjects. This can entail conducting their own study, getting data from classmates, or even speaking with faculty members at the school. They then offer their research as an article, frequently with a picture, a graph, or a game to keep the reader interested.

Headfort School gives parents a flexible alternative by providing wrap-around care for day students in addition to the option to board. The Junior Infants - 2nd Form's school day runs from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. There is an on-site after-school program open until 5.45 p.m.

The school day lasts all the way up to the third form, from 8.30 am to 6 pm. This program combines prep time, playtime, athletics, and extracurricular activities (homework). Every day at 8:00 am, students can participate in a breakfast club.

All students' wellbeing is given a lot of priority. Since the school is so small, teachers can closely follow each student's progress, and Headfort School is able to form deep bonds with every student. Teachers and Matrons place a high priority on listening and are always there to provide assistance and support as needed.

The social and emotional growth of every student is supported by a number of proactive programs. The Character Values program gives an understanding of fundamental life values including honesty, integrity, and kindness as well as the language to describe them.

All pupils, starting with junior infants, have access to a nutritionally-balanced cuisine thanks to the school's specialized chef.
