Guardianship in Cardiff

Any person who comes to the United Kingdom is obliged to follow the laws of the country. And according to British and Irish law, every foreign citizen who hasn’t reached sixteen years of age and is studying in an academic program that lasts for more than twelve weeks needs to have someone who will provide them with the services of guardianship in Cardiff or any other British city. A guardian acts as a child's parental figure, protecting their rights and interests and assisting with any problems that may arise. The system of guardianship in Cardiff, and in the United Kingdom as a whole, was made to safeguard a child from different angles, as the educational institutions are also responsible for a child whose parents reside in another country.

Who can provide guardianship in Cardiff?

Guardianship in Cardiff can be provided by a special company or by a relative of a child. With one exception: this relative cannot be a minor's brother or sister. Be it a relative or a company that is ready to take guardianship in Cardiff over a child, they need to meet a number of requirements, as the status of a legal guardian demands time and dedication.

First, they should have appropriate accommodation to be able to host a child during school breaks. Guardianship in Cardiff also requires hosting a child when they fall ill or if they happen to be suspended from school.

Second, the person who wants to be legally allowed to provide the services of guardianship in Cardiff can’t be younger than twenty-five years old.

Third, for obvious reasons, guardianship in Cardiff over a child can be taken only by a person who has never had a criminal record connected with pedophilia or drug abuse.

A person who meets all the criteria above has an opportunity to be legally appointed to provide the services of guardianship in Cardiff. But, as was already mentioned, they need to accomplish certain tasks to ensure a child's best interests are served. Besides hosting services, the one who has decided to take guardianship in Cardiff over a minor has to be ready to perform the following actions.

  1. Guardians need to help a child with documents, visas, and application arrangements.
  2. The one who provides guardianship in Cardiff services has to make decisions on behalf of a child when they need urgent medical involvement or surgery.
  3. On some occasions, guardianship in Cardiff presupposes that a guardian attends meetings for parents organised by boarding schools.

As you can see, you need to have some experience and knowledge in order to provide the services of guardianship in Cardiff and other cities in the United Kingdom. That’s why companies need to obtain special accreditation and certification to have the right to offer the services of guardianship in Cardiff. It costs between £4,000 and £5,000 to hire an agency, but the price plan varies according to the number of services they provide. Some can ask them to extend the package, and some can pay for the minimal number of services.

Why Cardiff?

Cardiff is the largest city in Wales and the eleventh largest in the United Kingdom. A lot of foreign citizens come to Wales, especially to the city of Cardiff, to study the English language and obtain school and higher education in the intuitions of the country. There are four large universities in the city of Cardiff: the University of South Wales, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff Metropolitan University, and Cardiff University.

Cardiff Metropolitan University is the youngest of all of them. It was established in 2011 in its present form, and in 2020 it was awarded the status of the Welsh University of the Year. However, its history traces back to 1865, when it was initially known as the Cardiff School of Art. Today it comprises eleven thousand students, over a thousand of whom come from more than 140 countries.

All international students at Cardiff Metropolitan University are provided with accommodation in one of the two halls of residence. All the bedrooms are for single occupancy, for this reason family members of students can’t stay with them. An en-suite self-catered room will cost around £140 per week; a catered room will cost around £115 per week; and a room with a shared bathroom is around £120 for a week. The students who opted for a catered room are provided with breakfast and supper every day.

Cardiff Metropolitan University encompasses five schools: the School of Arts and Design; the School of Education; the School of Management; the School of Sport and Health Sciences; and the School of Technologies.

At the undergraduate level, students at Cardiff Metropolitan University can achieve an Honours Bachelor's degree in Events Management, Accounting and Economics, Data Science, Environmental Health, Food Science and Nutrition, Global Business Management and a lot of other interesting programs. Undergraduate degrees will take from three to four years, with a tuition fee of £14,500 for each. A Postgraduate Masters degree lasts from one to two years, with each year's cost being around £15,500. The same amount is charged for a doctoral degree.

Before proceeding to the main studies at Cardiff Metropolitan University, international students can take the English language course first at this university. The center of English was established in 2006, so the instructors already have quite extensive experience in teaching international students Academic English. The program can be delivered in one-on-one mode or taken in a small group as a pre-sessional summer course. International students may also take a foundation course at Cardiff Metropolitan University, which will not only brush up international students’ knowledge of English but also get them introduced to the British education system, Critical Thinking, Context Analysis, and Professional Development. Overall, each of the modules is worth twenty credits, after which an international student can start their studies right after completion of the foundation year at Cardiff Metropolitan University, and it costs around £10,700 for two terms. The pre-sessional summer course can last from fourteen to six weeks and costs from £4,900 to £2,100. For example, if the initial level of the English language is equivalent to IELTS 5.5, it will take only six weeks to reach the level sufficient to start the main studies.

If an international student doesn’t want to spend an academic year doing a foundation year at Cardiff Metropolitan University or other university in the United Kingdom, they may do it by learning the language in one of the schools in Britain. There are a number of boarding schools in Wales, including Cardiff, that offer international students summer programs and even the opportunity to finish high school together with local students. One of them is Westbourne School, located eight kilometres away from Cardiff and established in 1896. It was a preparatory school for boys only, but soon became co-educational. Currently, it’s an independent boarding school for boys and girls from the age of two to eighteen. More than two hundred students are enrolled at Westbourne School annually. Students study in small classes. For example, in senior school, a group can be comprised of only eight students. In some rankings, Westbourne was named the best boarding school in Wales and the best International Baccalaureate School in 2019.

All students wake up at 7.30 a.m. and have breakfast served to them in a dining room by a so-called boarding house parents who takes care of the kids living in the house. The boarding house parents organise weekend trips for boarders to Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon and other picturesque places in the United Kingdom. They also often go to theatres, cinemas, and take part in various entertaining events. Students at Westbourne School don’t only enjoy their free time during the weekends but also participate in various extracurricular activities throughout the week. There are thirty clubs to choose from. For example, students can take musical classes and learn how to play the piano, flute, the organ, cello, or other instruments. Among the sports clubs, there are dodgeball, tennis, cross country, and others in which students can take part. There is also a Model United Nations, a Digital Journalist Club, a Welsh Club, a Latin Club, and even an iPhone photography club. By the way, besides going on weekend trips as a part of a boarding community, students and school staff often travel abroad or to interesting places within the United Kingdom to complement their Biology, Geography, and History classes.

International students must take an entrance exam in order to be admitted to Westbourne School. It aims at assessing their knowledge of English, Math, and non-verbal reasoning. If an international student’s level of English is insufficient, they are offered additional English classes by Westbourne School. If an international student shows high academic performance during their studies, Westbourne School awards them a discount of 5% to 35% in tuition fees.
