In Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, England, there is a private boarding and day school for girls ages 3 to 18 called Badminton School. The school, which was founded in Clifton, Bristol and was given the name Badminton House, has been at its current location since 1924. It routinely ranks highly in the government's league tables, particularly at A-Level. In the Financial Times' list of the top 1,000 universities in 2008, the school came in third.

As soon as a girl turns three, Badminton School will welcome her into Little Acorns. Following their fourth birthday in September, they then transfer to Acorns Reception. Small courses, specialized instruction, and controlled play are all part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Girls have several opportunities to perform in the performing arts, which are taught by specialists. Aside from helping girls acquire intuitive computer abilities, Badminton School also introduces French at this stage (with formal studies following in the Junior School). There is no one type of sixth former at Badminton School because there is a healthy influx of new sixth formers into the Lower Sixth alongside those who have joined the School in previous years and a mix of Day Girls and Boarders (with flexi-boarding available as well). The tutorial and seminar models of higher education are used in teaching. Although class sizes of three or four are more typical, some disciplines allow for groups of up to seven students. Teachers from the Badminton School have come here because they like the participatory, discussion-based working style. The Badminton School Sixth Form produces the kind of independent thinkers that universities seek in their applicants. Sixth-form girls express their excitement and confidence about continuing on to college. In addition to the excellent academic preparation students gained at Badminton School, they also learn crucial "life stuff," such as how to share a refrigerator and how to ask for and provide advice. The Sixth Form Centre spacious, inviting common room is where girls gather to discuss their most recent essays, catch up on current events (daily delivery of a huge number of newspapers), calm their minds with some work on communal jigsaw puzzles, and more. Friends can gather in the smaller common rooms and "beer rooms," which are also a welcoming place for people to take a break from studying. The Centre has computer labs and seminar rooms, and Day Girls have private study spaces they can use after school and during free hours. The kitchen, which includes a blender, waffle maker, fridge, oven, and toaster, is well used by both day girls and boarders. Sixth Form Boarders have study rooms upstairs in the Center, which include "brew rooms" for refreshments between rooms sleeping one or two. Many of the academic and boarding staff members reside on-site. Both the Higher Education & Professional Guidance Coordinator and the Head of Sixth Form have offices in the Center, and both have an open door policy, allowing girls to pop in at any time for support, guidance, or simply a conversation.

School Life

After the day's classes are over and on weekends, boarding students can choose from a wide variety of extracurricular activities. There is plenty of opportunity to unwind and spend time with friends at Badminton School in addition to clubs, athletics, music practice, and volunteer activities.

Weekends are jam-packed with events and outings, many of which Day Girls are encouraged to join. Favorite local destinations for outings include the Bristol Aquarium and Westfield Shopping Center, but depending on the season, Badminton School may also visit the North Devon shore for some surfing, visit a nearby Christmas market, or go ice skating.

In addition to their primary academic work, girls can engage in activities like gardening, fencing, judo, and mandarin. Girls organize hockey and netball games, and they arrange swimming competitions in the 25-meter indoor pool with students from neighboring schools.

A few of the well-liked after-school organizations are the Art Club, Orchestra, Mandarin, French, Team Swimming, and Mosaic Making. In a similar vein, the Friday Afternoon Activities give girls the opportunity to enjoy the conclusion of the school week by trying something new every Term or Half Term, whether it be horseback riding, jewelry- and pottery-making, street dancing, origami, yoga, or joining the Book Club.

Future Prospects

The generous annual Award is given by the Old Badmintonians Association to help with the price of books and other university-related study supplies. Students may begin applying at the start of their final school term, and a female pursuing any field of study at the university may get the award.
