School Life in Bandon Grammar School

The boarding community at Bandon Grammar School works to provide the resident students with a comfortable yet orderly environment. Bandon Grammar School thinks this enables pupils to perform at their best in all areas, including academics, sports, and the arts. The pupils can unwind and recharge after studying. 

Both boys and girls may board for five days and seven days at the school. Around 130 boarders are accepted each year by Bandon Grammar School, split evenly between the boys' house at Roundhill House and the girls' home at Richmount House. 

The spacious, well-lit, and recently renovated dorms can accommodate 4 to 6 students each, allowing for a healthy mix between personal space and the sharing that fosters close relationships. Each home has a modern bathroom and recreational amenities that are kept up well. 

Ms. Audrey O'Riordan oversees boarding, with help from the night staff, matrons, nurse, chaplain, guidance counselor, and coaches. Boys and girls from Bandon Grammar School eat together in the large, modern dining hall where the catering motto is choice, quality, and flavor. 

Annual Boarder games, Christmas Dinner, Carol Singing, Summer BBQ, and Film & Pizza nights are just a few of the events that take place all year long.

Boarders participate in lessons and extracurricular activities with day students. 

The Supervised Prep Study is a daily evening requirement for all boarders. Students are watched during this time and given assistance as needed.

Only during the academic year do students spend five nights a week on the campus of the school.  Students must be present either on Sunday evening between 7 and 10 o'clock or on Monday morning by 8:40 a.m. Every Friday at the conclusion of the academic day, all 5-Day Boarders depart. 

After school, students train in sports including rugby, hockey, basketball, and athletics.

Students can utilize the renovated gyms in 2021 for morning, weekend, or evening PE lessons with their teams. After school, boarders can utilize the gym as well. A variety of students at Bandon Grammar School are encouraged to use the gym for their physical and emotional welfare.

Future Prospects

The guidance counselor works with first-year students to help them select their Junior Certificate subjects. Before the Fourth Year students select their Leaving Cert subjects, the guidance counselor does the same with them.

Parents are given presentations on the topic of subject selection and possibilities. For parents in their first, third, and fourth years, there is an informational evening. Parents of Leaving Cert students are also given a presentation outlining their options after the exam.

One career guidance lesson each week is offered to fourth-year classes.

Students in the fifth and sixth years get throughout the year on a rotating basis.

As needed, the guidance counselor also has follow-up phone calls and meetings with students and parents about career-related issues.

The guidance counselor offers suggestions and helps students complete their UCAS applications for the British third-level education system.

Links with regional businesses are maintained for the apprenticeship program, most notably with Eli Lilly.

The entering first-years' CAT (Cognitive Ability Test) is administered by the guidance counselor.

Bandon Grammar School plans excursions (PLC Open Days, UCC and MTU TY Open Days, UL/ LIT/ Mary I Open Days, organize lecturers into the classroom, plan cohorts of students to attend different career activities, such as Prep for Med Day, Law Experience Day, etc.).
