Chigwell School
In the English public school tradition, Chigwell School is a coed day and boarding independent school in the Chigwell neighborhood of Essex's Epping Forest. It has a sixth form, a senior school, a junior school, and a pre-prep (for children aged 4-7). For the 2013–14 school year, a pre-preparatory department for kids ages 4–7 was built.
Ten miles from London, the school is located on 100 acres of land between the forests of Epping and Hainault. The Junior School is a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS), and it belongs to the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC).
Programs
The foundation for teaching and learning in the Reception classes is the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum Framework. It includes three primary learning areas (personal social and emotional development, communication and language development, and physical development) and four specialized learning areas, totaling seven areas of learning and development (mathematics, understanding the world, literacy and expressive arts and design).
A large portion of the curriculum is taught using a themed approach to engage students and foster independent learning, however literacy, numeracy, and physical education are taught separately. An emphasis is placed on learning via play, with the right amount of child- and adult-led activities. Through structured play activities and hands-on exploration, opportunities for outdoor learning are added to all subject areas of the curriculum.
A comprehensive and balanced curriculum that is highly creative, where skills are continuously developed, assessed, and adapted to meet the requirements of people, is followed by all children. The way that school is set up allows for a good combination of academic, physical, and artistic experiences. All study programs are built on the National Curriculum, which is modified to match the needs of the children in the care.
There is a foundation in science, math, and English. In order to give the students the chance to succeed, Chigwell School incorporates the fundamental skills that they require while using the most innovative teaching techniques. The curriculum is connected where necessary to integrate important abilities into all the topics and allow for individualized monitoring of the students' development.
The Drop Everything and Read program at Chigwell School, which promotes reading from a young age, is offered in the middle of the school day. The Junior School library can be used to improve literacy, and Chigwell School hosts visiting writers, speakers, and a reading program.
Additionally, Chigwell School maintains the Pre-outdoor Prep's education program by offering Year 3 and 4 students woodland days. Residential retreats in Years 5 and 6 aid in the growth of their independence.
The curriculum at Chigwell School is so extensive, allowing students to sample a wide range of courses while also developing the essential skills they will need in the future. The learning is supported throughout by extra activities including workshops, exhibits, theater companies, museums, performances, plays, and concerts.
As students go through the school, there is an element of expanded choice incorporated into the comprehensive and balanced curriculum starting in Year 7. Chigwell School strives to be as adaptable as it can to offer a selection of curriculum that is suitable for each individual student.
The subjects that students learn in Years 7 through 9 include English, arithmetic, geography, history, religious studies, art, design & technology, IT, music, and theater. In Years 7 and 8, students take at least one modern foreign language. French is introduced in Year 7, after which it is an elective. Students also study German or Spanish in Year 7, and they learn Latin in Years 7 and 8. Biology, physics, and chemistry are taught separately in Year 8 while science is taught as a single topic in Year 7. In addition to physical education, each year group enjoys a weekly games afternoon.
Students also get to pick from three more subjects. While advice is offered on how to put together a sensible combination of subjects and the ramifications for university and careers are highlighted, there is no extra obligation placed on students with regard to these additional choices. Students may select three subjects from the following categories: art, computer, design and technology, drama, geography, graphic design, history, music, and religious studies. In addition to the language chosen as a core subject, students may select a second or third language. They make their selections, and a blocking system is created to accommodate as many students' first choices as possible (rarely do they not get their first choice subjects). Every week, all students participate in PE, a games afternoon, and a PSHE lesson. Some students might choose to enroll in the Higher Project Qualification. Chigwell sixth formers choose three to four A level subjects. From the October half-term in Year 12, those who begin with four and later choose to concentrate on three may do so.
The course offerings are extensive and academic, encompassing all disciplines studied at Chigwell to the GCSE/IGCSE level as well as economics, politics, and psychology. Students who select this option also take mathematics at the A-level, and it counts as one subject choice. Additional mathematics is given.
In order to offer students a clear understanding of their level of achievement in an exam context, there are typically three sets of progress assessments in each year of the sixth form.
Beginning in September 2020, every Year 12 student participates in an academic enrichment program for one class each week, selecting from a variety of themes. Many Chigwell pupils enroll in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which requires work to be completed between Christmas in Year 12 and the same time in Year 13. A teacher serves as their academic adviser during this time. Half of an A level is equal to the EPQ. Many colleges recognize it as an independent research project that concludes with a presentation and an essay in the style of a dissertation and prepares the foundation for the more independent requirements of an undergraduate course.
School Life
Chigwell's student body is primarily composed of local residents. The modest boarding houses serve as homes where the foreign boarders can interact with their neighboring local friends. The boarders have the opportunity to meet local students and their families, as well as experience everyday life in the UK outside of school, such as having supper at the homes of new friends.
The campus's boarding houses are all located adjacent to one another, and each one is only a short distance from the school's facilities. The boarders utilize the gym in the evenings to play basketball, use the rowing machines, and run, jog, or walk on the large grounds. When Chigwell School has a hot weekend, some students swim before class and cool off in the on-site pool. Chigwell's Saturday sports program is highly diverse. On the northern border of London, in the charming village of Chigwell, is where Chigwell School is located. Due to the school's proximity to London, boarders frequently visit its well-known landmarks, museums, exhibitions, university lectures, and participate in enjoyable activities like ice skating in the winter. Chigwell School takes time to spend together as a resident community as well as as a separate boarding house, in the smaller Chigwell Families. Every year, Chigwell School hosts a variety of formal dinners, competitive sports nights, and drama theater showings of famous movies.
Future Prospects

The eight Gatsby Benchmarks are followed by the careers curriculum at Chigwell School. The vast majority of Chigwell graduates attend Russell Group universities or institutions with comparable offerings, mostly in the UK, though some also secure admission to top institutions abroad. A small but increasing number of students also choose to apprentice at the graduate level. The top three universities for graduates in 2021 were UCL, Nottingham, and Birmingham. Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, KCL, Loughborough, York, Warwick, Manchester, Leeds, and many more were among the many other places to go. These graduates, as usual, selected a wide range of degree programs, and Chigwell School gave sixth-graders the tools they needed to pick the programs and universities that would best suit their unique interests and goals.
