Geoffrey Davison Brown established Cottesmore School in Hove, East Sussex, in 1894. The school bears his birthplace of Cottesmore School in Rutland as its name. On June 19, 1897, the new structures for the preparatory school were formally inaugurated. The school was relocated to Wales in 1940 from the south coast of England, first to the Oakeley Arms Hotel in Tan-y-bwlch, Merioneth, and then to a disused workhouse in Cors-y-Gedol Hall, close to Barmouth, where it remained until the conclusion of the war. After the Second World War, in 1946, the school relocated to its current location near Pease Pottage. The structure was created by architects Ernest George and Harold Peto, and it is a sizable home in the Elizabethan style.
