Our academic foundation is essential; with motivating instruction in attentive, small-group settings, each child can grow to the fullest extent possible in pursuit of a purpose. Exemplary conduct is demanded, manners are emphasized, and they play a crucial role in the close pastoral care of each person.
Students that enroll in middle school will benefit from a vibrant environment and an even greater variety of extracurricular activities. The focus is still on fostering individual accountability and healthy self-esteem. The Middle School's residential house structure serves as the foundation for the pastoral system. All students who enroll in the Middle School in Year 9 go into one of the integrated boarding and day Houses at Ellesmere College, where they are cared for by a Housemaster or Housemistress and a group of committed tutors.
There is one female Middle School House, St Aidan's, and two male Middle School Houses, St Cuthbert's and St Patrick's. The tutor-student relationship will typically last the entire three years leading up to the GCSE. A strong premium is placed on the growth of positive relationships between the tutor and the student as well as between the tutor and the parents. This supports the idea that open lines of contact between the home and school guarantee the best possible care for students during such critical developmental years. Each student in the middle school will have a loyalty to a Competitive House. The Ellesmere College Pre-Sixth is a one-year program that prepares international students for study in an English-medium school's Sixth Form (both IB and A Level). Before students transfer to the sixth form the following year, Ellesmere College places a strong emphasis on developing their spoken and written English as well as their GCSE scores in foundational areas. Pre-Sixth pupils can confidently begin their Sixth Form programmes, whether they are for the International Baccalaureate Diploma or A Level, without the need for a transitional phase, integrating completely into life at Ellesmere College from the day they arrive.
Pre-Sixth is a one-year intense program created to get students from outside the UK ready for A-Level and iB courses in the Sixth Form. Five to six GCSE subjects that are taught in greater depth are included in the programme. Included are: A couple of sciences (specializing in either Biology, Chemistry or Physics) First-language requirements include English, mathematics, geography, and a language—either a first language that is one's native tongue, like German, or a second language if one is already fluent, like French, Spanish, or Latin.
