Over two-thirds of the students at Fettes College, an independent coed boarding and day school in Edinburgh, Scotland, live on campus. The school changed from being a boys-only boarding school to a co-ed institution in 1983. The 300-acre forested campus of the College featured a nine-hole golf course, an ice rink that was used for ice hockey in the winter and an outdoor swimming pool in the summer, a cross-country running track, and a rifle shooting range in 1978. Although that word was historically reserved for state schools in Scotland, Fettes College is occasionally referred to as a public school. The school was established in 1870 thanks to a grant from Sir William Fettes, and females were first admitted in 1970.
