Programs

The Early Years classrooms at Kent College Canterbury Junior School are located in a separate, secure building on the school's campus and overlook the lovely grounds that the kids can use for outdoor sessions and recess. Each year group includes a set of spacious, superbly furnished, bright, and airy classrooms with sliding doors that can be opened to create places for seated instruction, reading breakouts, play areas, and areas for arts and crafts.

Children can run about the playhouses, make mud pies in the outdoor kitchen, race on the tricycle track, build sandcastles in the sandpit, and engage with water play in their own designated playground. Children in the Early Years can then explore the 14-acre campus's lovely woodlands, several play areas, and even make trips up to the School Farm to see the lambs, calves, and piglets.

A variety of visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic teaching methods are used to provide the Early Years curriculum utilizing a theme approach. This may be student- or teacher-initiated.

After a structured morning of math and phonics/literacy classes, a dynamic afternoon program is offered.

Specialized Early Years teachers at Kent College Canterbury Junior School develop individualized lesson plans to address each child's developmental needs. In each child's learning notebook, thorough observations are recorded and tracking is accessible online.

Every child is unique, and Kent College Canterbury Junior School believes that every child needs the best start in life so that they can reach their full potential. The National Curriculum (Key Stages 1 and 2) follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, upon which the school bases its teaching and learning methods. This framework provides a solid foundation for intellectual, artistic, and academic growth, and Kent College Canterbury Junior School's tailored programs enable us to modify the curriculum to meet the needs of each child.

The curriculum is structured around an academic morning and a creative afternoon from Pre-Reception to Year 6. Youngsters start off the day bright-eyed, awake, and ready to learn. The morning is centered around literacy and numeracy, and in the afternoon, a number of other specialized courses are taught.

Although the standard school day at Kent College Canterbury Junior School is from 8:40 am to 16:00 pm, the wide variety of Early and Late Care facilities, along with clubs and activities, enable us to offer care from 7:30 am to 18:30 pm every day.

The accelerated learning program is a key component of the innovative academic curriculum of Kent College Canterbury Junior School. All children, including those in the Early Years, get numeracy and literacy instruction in math and English in the mornings. We can consolidate learning for those who need it or extend and accelerate learning by focusing on the needs of each individual child. The children are more alert and full of energy at this time and ready to begin the accelerated learning program, which groups children in average class sizes of 16 according to their stage of development rather than age. Throughout the year, kids can switch groups to best fit their learning needs. The first priority is for a youngster to have equal amounts of support, engagement, and stretching.

The Arithmetic and English Mainstream Plus programs at Kent College Canterbury Junior School give students who work with teachers the chance to receive additional targeted learning boosts. This fosters children's confidence in maintaining momentum in a positive and enjoyable way without interfering with play or other academic pursuits.

Every student in grades 1-6 keeps an academic diary at school in which they record their assignments. A critical home-school connection is the diary. When a child's homework is finished, parents of day students are asked to sign it in the diary, add any comments, or let the teacher know if there are any problems.

Each week, there will be two English and two Math homework assignments. This could take the form of a quick exercise lasting 10 to 25 minutes or a thinking exercise that extends the learning so that your child is prepared to discuss it the following day. The assignment will, wherever feasible, be reviewed at the start of the following lesson. You can reserve the weekend for leisurely reading!
